Dear friends and colleagues,

As 2023 draws to a close it is important to reflect on the blockbuster year we got through. A number of the high-profile news events that stood out for me:

  • We are fast approaching the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. (Feb 2024)
  • Hamas launches surprise attack in Israel; Israel responds with the bombing/invasion of Gaza, resulting in high civilian deaths.
  • The launch of ChatGPT-4 by OpenAI has taken the world by storm. It also raises questions of legitimacy and authenticity of content.
  • Summer 2023 was declared the hottest on record. The World Meteorological Organisation released data indicating that June-August 2023 was the hottest three-month period in recorded history across the Earth.
  • Devastating quakes flattening entire cities in southeast Turkey, Syria, and Morocco. Deadly wildfires from the Hawaiian Island of Maui, the Greek islands of Rhodes and Corfu, to Canada with over eighteen million hectares of forest going up in smoke.
  • Hollywood goes on the largest strike in Tinseltown since the 1960s.  Writers demanded curbs on the use of AI technology in films as well as a pay rise, and Hollywood actors feared that AI could clone their voices and likenesses. This strike crippled the entertainment industry and delayed hundreds of popular shows.
  • Titan submersible goes missing, likely implodes near Titanic.
  • The space race heats up and the Moon is the new frontier. India is the rising star and is becoming the first nation to successfully land an unmanned craft on the Moon’s south pole, just days after a Russian lunar vehicle crashed into its surface.
  • South Africans celebrated the riveting 12-11 rugby victory over New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Boks successfully defended their World Cup trophy and solidified their status as a global rugby giant.
  • The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup marked a time of great celebration for Spain after their historic win. Unfortunately, the forced Spanish kiss overshadowed their win and lead to outrage and a sexism scandal that dominated global headlines.
  • South Africans brace for crucial General Elections in 2024 – make sure you are registered!
