Greetings Cyberwolves

Welcome to our June edition of “The Wolf Howl”.

The 21st of June marked the official midpoint of the year, known as the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. As we navigate towards summer and longer days, two pivotal events are still at the top of South Africa’s mind: the new era of coalition government and the recent commemoration of Youth Day. These occasions are vital reminders of the ongoing efforts to foster a secure and inclusive digital environment for all.

The South African elections present a unique opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of cybersecurity coalitions that safeguard our democratic processes and grow our economy. In an era of fake news and deep fakes, cyber threats are increasing in sophistication, and ensuring the integrity of our electoral systems has never been more critical. Cybersecurity professionals play a key role in defending against misinformation, data breaches, and other cyber threats that could undermine the democratic process. By leveraging partnerships, advanced technologies and implementing robust security protocols, we can contribute to a fair and transparent democratic process.

Youth Day was celebrated on the 16th of June, honouring the brave students who stood up for their rights during the Soweto Uprising in 1976. This day was a tribute to their courage and a call to action for empowering today’s youth. As the next generation of leaders, innovators, and cybersecurity experts, young people hold the key to shaping a secure cyber future. It is our responsibility to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the digital landscape safely.

It is essential to foster a culture of cyber awareness, resilience, and good habits among our youth because they are our future. Let us highlight the critical role of cybersecurity education and awareness initiatives and empower the youth in the fight against cyber threats.

Thank you for joining us on this journey and making a difference together.

Yours Securely

A ransomware incident has significantly impacted the delivery of services at some of London’s busiest hospitals. Synnovis, a provider of lab services, was the victim of the incident.

Moving closer to home.  Senior doctors working in the public health system have called for urgent interventions to speed up medical testing after the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) shut down its communication system because of a cyberattack that could result in a ‘Life and death issue’.

The latest breach has affected one of the world’s largest live entertainment providers, Ticketmaster, and its parent company, Live Nation.

Unlike many other attacks this year with a significant ransomware component, this one is tied back to risk from a third-party provider. The often overlooked entry point for threat actors.

The Supreme Court of Appeal has overturned a High Court ruling that leading law firm Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs was liable to pay a woman R5.5 million stolen by fraudsters who manipulated emails sent from the firm.  This is a clear message to verify bank account details before paying.

The Adventures of CISO Ed & Co attempts to highlight the everyday frustrations, heroism, and insights of CISOs and infosec teams while bringing some fun to the serious business of cybersecurity. We hope CISO Ed & Co. brings a grin as you  go about your day. Compliments of Balbix

It was great to see you all at ITWeb. Recorded live at ITWeb Security Summit 2024, Craig Rosewarne, MD at Wolfpack Information Risk, joined ITWeb’s Adrian Hinchcliffe to discuss how South Africa is increasingly becoming a “hot target” for cybercriminals.

Cybercrime self-defence is not just about reading; it is about doing and reaching out to assist others in your ecosystem.

Cyber threats loom large and dark, but with each skill mastered, they shrink, outmanoeuvred by your newfound skill. We encourage you to transform your knowledge into action and shake off that lone wolf mentality.  Follow our weekly LinkedIn “Watch out” Wednesday awareness posts to delve deeper into taking responsibility for your online safety.

If you thought you could share what you like, say what you like or even like whatever you want online, think again.

Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to social media law expert Emma Sadleir about the dangers of social media and how even kids could be liable for things shared online.
